Day 3 – Earth Week Tip: Make do without Paper Towels.

dish towels, earth week, save trees, eco-friendlyUse dish towels instead. Did you know if every household in the U.S. replaced just one roll of 180-sheet virgin-fiber paper towels with 100-percent recycled paper towels, we could save: 1.4 million trees, 3.7 million cubic feet of landfill space, and 526 million gallons of water, and prevent 89,400 pounds of pollution?

My favorite: When you are done with cloth diapers or burp clothes, reuse them for household cleaning. They are relatively low on dust and leave no streaks on glass!

Day 2 – Earth Week Tip: Save water.

water faucet, water, turn off water, preserve water, save waterTurn the water off while brushing your teeth, washing your hands, and washing dishes. Take shorter showers (you will save water and energy to heat it, reducing your carbon dioxide emissions). Do only full loads of laundry, re-use bath towels a few times before you wash.  Did you know each time your toilet is flushed, it uses five to seven gallons of water?  Let’s all pay extra attention today to how much water we’re actually using, and make an effort to save some for a later date.

Household Cleaners vs. Asthma

asthma, child We know pregnancy changes us, right? You gain weight, you find emotions you never had, you eat more, have trouble breathing out of nowhere…. WHAT? Nobody ever told me that one!  I was one of the lucky people to develop adult on-set asthma and allergies from my body composition changing during pregnancy! And, you guessed it; my daughter was born with the same issues.

What is asthma? – Asthma is a chronic inflammatory respiratory disease characterized by periodic attacks of wheezing, shortness of breath, and a tight feeling in the chest.  (http://respiratory-lung.health-cares.net/adult-onset-asthma.ph)

After my daughter was born, I had trouble taking deep breaths and wheezed with congestion in my lungs that I never had. A few months later spring hit and suddenly I couldn’t go outside without my nose dripping and having breathing issues-pollen and grass allergies with asthma. As spring progressed and my daughter was outside, she developed the dry, hacking cough that kids get with asthma as well. Suddenly I find myself on medications to breath, fight seasonal allergies and using a nebulizer to put medicine in not only my airways but my daughter’s airway as well. Crazy when you have never dealt with this before!

So now I have to find triggers and avoid these “things” for us both. Ok-easy enough.  Take meds regularly, watch the dust in the house, and keep windows closed and pollens out.  Keep house extra clean, right? Wrong! Keeping the house “extra” clean proved to be a MAJOR trigger in the asthmatic systems.

Household cleaning products such as bleach or that contain bleach are extremely harmful to adults and children’s lungs-especially those with asthma.  Who knew? I found out the hard way while cleaning with a bleach product in a small bathroom space.  I had a major asthma attack, and the fumes traveled to the lower level and resulted in my daughter’s coughing attack as well.  (http://www.thedailygreen.com/living-green/blogs/organic-parenting/asthma-chlorine-55040901)

Now what? Finding household cleaning products that are less harmful on the body.   This isn’t an easy task. Most experts say to clean with vinegar and water, which I tried.  It just doesn’t seem like everything in the house can be cleaned with the same cleaning product!  So along comes Carribean Mist…non-toxic, natural products for cleaning that are better for the environment and the body.  A clean house mom’s dream comes true!

When we think of products that are greener for the environment, we also have to think of what these products are doing to our bodies. If they are bad for the earth, chances are they are not good for our insides either!  Think green, and breathe easier!!

Day 1 – Earth Week Tip: Bring your own recyclable bag to the grocery store

green, reusable bag, earth, eco-friendly, earth dayBring your own recyclable bag to the grocery store. Or if you use plastic bags, find ways to recycle or re-use them. Plastic bags can be recycled at many grocery stores, and paper bags can be recycled with other paper, but the recycling process and manufacture of new bags require much more energy—resulting in more greenhouse gas—than the production of reusable cloth bags. Bring cloth bags with you every time you shop (for groceries, clothes, and everything else).

My favorite:  Re-using plastic bags to clean out the litter box from kitty waste, or if you have a dog, take them to the yard and clean up doggie droppings!

40th Anniversary of Earth Day

earth day, 2010, save the earth, graphic, april 22, reuse, recycle, reduce, replenish, restoreEarth Day is the day designated for creating awareness and appreciation of the earth’s environment and of the issues that threaten it. My first memory of Earth Day awareness was not until 10th grade in high school and THAT was many Earth Days ago! Our Student Council group planted a tree on the school grounds. Since then, I have heard so much on saving our environment, saving water, recycling, changing to energy efficient light bulbs, and global warming that it almost has become second nature. We tend not to pay too much attention to the noise about our Earth anymore.

We do the obvious things-recycle cans, push trash in its proper containers, and turn lights off when we leave a room. But we can do more! In celebration of Earth Day and Earth Week, we’re providing one tip each day that we can do to keep the awareness for our environment a foremost thought so our kid’s kids can enjoy our beautiful Earth!
